AB OUT: Jason Nitsch’s longingly beautiful rendition of this well-known hymn tune uses lyrical motion and powerful climactic moments to make a bold statement, begging performers and audi ences alike to ponder and reflect long after its closing statement. FROM THE COMPOSER: It Is Well was written in almost a single wri ting session one Saturday morning in 2021. As is often the case, this melody had bounced around in my head for many years before I finally got the “spark” that told me I finally knew how I wanted to treat it. Only very minor edits followed that initi al work produced and the version that you have here is nearly unchanged from the original. The hymn-tune “It Is Well With My Soul” is one of the most well-known hymns and melodies of the last two centuries. The text was written by Horatio Spafford in 1873 following the loss of his four daughters in a shipwreck while crossing the Atlantic. While travelling to meet his wife Anna, who survived the sinking, is it said that he was moved to compose the text in an expression of his grief as his ship passed over the location of the accident. The text was set to the now well-known melody in 1876 by composer Phillip Bliss. While it would certainly be appropriate, and tempting, to set this beautiful hymn in the most gorgeous of manners, I tried to capture both the immense sadness that Spafford must have felt…along with the hopeful resolve and faith that resonates within his chosen words.
