The openi ng theme, pl ayed by the horns, was wri t ten to capt ure t he wonder of the zoo seen in the eyes of t hos e who have

never experi enced anythi ng si mil ar bef ore. The f i rst ex hibi t t he pi ece arri ves at is the monkeys, based on
a t ranscri pt ion of the gi bbons’ howli ng t hat can be heard out si de t he zoo. As t he li stener moves on t o t he nex t exhi bit , and each exhi bit f oll owing, the ori ginal z oo t heme ret urns. Thi s i s fol lowed by the maj es ti c elephant s in the largest enclos ure in the zoo. The next exhi bit houses not only bi rds, which are heard f i rst, but t he t hree-t oed s lot h seen sl owly making i ts way t hrough t he same t rees t hat the bi rds are
perched in. The transi ti on t o t he s lot h occurs by the l ow brass and horns playi ng clus ter chords of three

comes i nto vi ew. The zoo theme i s t hen heard agai n as the li st eners move out of the bi rd ex hi bit to that of t he peacock. Thi s s ecti on opens l ike t he tail of the peacock, growi ng unt il t he f ul l scal e of it s beauty can
