The French composer Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 - 1921) composed the march "Sur les bord du Nil” in January 1908 during his stay in Egypt. Saint-Saëns was honored by Abbas Hilmi Pasha II. (1874 - 1944), the last Khedive (governor) of the Ottoman province of Egypt, for his services to this country. In gratitude he dedicated the present composition to him.
Although Saint-Saëns speaks of a march for military music, it is more likely that the work was premiered in February 1908 on the occasion of the Governor's Ball in the version for piano for four hands composed and arranged by Saint-Saëns himself.
The first guaranteed performance of the version for wind orchestra dates from 26 June 1909 at the Elysée Palace in Paris. Gabriel Parès conducted the Garde Républicaine in his adaptation of this composition from January 1909.
This edition presented here is based on the version for piano for 4 hands by Camille Saint-Saëns published by Durand in 1908.
