The origin of Patapan dates back to 1720s France. The simple instruments that were available to shepherds, such as flutes and drums, are referenced and imitated throughout the carol. This arrangement attempts to capture the spirit of classic fantasy pieces, taking the listener through a variety of moods without straying far from the well-known melody. The scoring features as few as five or as many as nine percussionists, and only standard instruments are required.
