Brass.
Many trumpet players have found the vocalise - a lyrical vocal exercise - lends itself perfectly to brass instruments. While originally composed for the voice, the style, phrasing, and range of these selected works translate into excellent trumpet performance pieces. The melodies within this book were taken from Eighteen Solfeggi for Two Voices by Italian pianist and vocal teacher, Giuseppe Concone (1801–1861) and Petite messe brêve for two voices and piano, by Bernhard Lütgen (c. 1835–c. 1870). Dr. Mike Huff, Professor of Trumpet at Troy University, draws on his extensive teaching and performance experience to skillfully adapt these duets for two trumpets, including suggested phrase markings to facilitate relaxed breathing.

Italian musician, Giuseppe Concone (1801–1861) was born, trained and lived most of his life in Turin, Italy, located in the north, not far from the borders of France and Switzerland. He was known as a teacher of voice and piano and composed several sets of vocalises for the purpose of training the voice that have grown to become standard repertoire for vocalists and adapt wonderfully well for brass instruments. He spent a period of about ten years in Paris mostly teaching and composing and after the French Revolution, returned to Turin where he served as Maestro di Cappella at the Chapel Royal until his death. The material in these duets is drawn from his Eighteen Solfeggi for Two Voices. The phrase markings have been extended to help develop a larger, more relaxed inhalation and a more complete exhalation, which should assist in taking another relaxed inhalation. However, breaking these phrase markings is perfectly acceptable to facilitate performance.Very little is known about Bernhard Lütgen (c. 1835–c. 1870) who is generally accepted as a teacher of voice who composed the well-known 20 Daily Exercises and The Art of Velocity for the purpose of training vocalists. The material in these duets are drawn from his Petite messe brêve (Small, short mass) in Latin for two voices and harmonium or piano.Dr. Mike Huff serves as Professor of Trumpet at Troy University and performs as a member of the Mobile Symphony, the Pensacola Symphony and the Meridian Symphony. Prior to his appointment at Troy University, he taught at Mississippi State University and performed as a member of the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. Dr. Huff has earned degrees from the University of Massachusetts, the Eastman School of Music and the Catholic University of America. He has studied trumpet with Charles Daval, Langston Fitzgerald, Barbara Butler, Charles Geyer and Walter Chesnut. He has performed additionally with the Mississippi Symphony, Starkville Symphony, Washington Opera, Annapolis Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Virginia Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic.
