Nothing to Fear, Nothing to Doubt came out of a very difficult time in my life where fear and doubt were very real daily struggles. The music is based on the Radiohead song, “Codex” from their album the King of Limbs. This particular song, while beautiful and peaceful, is quite dark and devoid of hope, so I decided to treat the source material in a different way; the piece begins like a camera that is completely out of focus so that all that one can see are nebulous blobs of color. Eventually, the music gradually gains direction and momentum until, by the end of the piece, the musical shapes and gestures are crystal clear. The title, “Nothing to Fear, Nothing to Doubt,” comes from the lyrics of a different Radiohead song which has as its theme acceptance of life’s trials, resilience, and forward progress. Nothing to Fear, Nothing to Doubt was commissioned by a consortium of high school and university wind ensembles:
