Jeunes Fillettes is an eighteenth-century French melody with text by an anonymous composer. It was harmonized and set as a vocal solo by Jean-Baptiste Weckerlin in the late 1800s as part of a collection titled Bergerettes, Romances et Chansons du XVIIIe siècle. This playful, flirtatious, yet cautionary poem is translated below:Young maiden, let’s make the most of our time,The violet is picked in the springtime.La la la la rirette, la ri lon la la. The little flower dies in a short time,All love also passes.La la la rirette, la ri lon la la. In your prime take a lover,If he is fickle, give it back to him.La la la rirette, la ri lon la la.Translation by Dan Miner This arrangement contains many opportunities to explore phrasing, articulation, dynamics and drama. Treat all markings literally using the marked crescendos/decrescendos to guide phrase shape and the plethora of tenuto markings to create strong emphases within each section. To achieve maximum dramatic effect, encourage singers to focus on the note that follows a tenuto and perform it at a slightly softer dynamic.
