North for Brass Quintet is a major three movement composition. Challenging rhythms and great harmonic progressions are displayed throughout this three movement piece. The first movement features a French horn cadenza. The second movement uses flugelhorns in place of the trumpets. The third movement has a tuba cadenza and concludes with an intense ending. J. D. Cavanagh studied composition at the Royal Northern College of Music.
