RED, YELLOW, BLUE is designed to be performed by beginning bands and is ideal as one of your first performance pieces. This piece could be played with a minimum of 5 players. A combination of 2 trumpets, baritone, snare drum and bass drum could perform this piece. Other similar combinations could be used such as 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, and snare drum and bass drum. This piece can be performed with minimum technique. Most technique books will cover the range of this piece by page 24. The rhythm is limited to quarter notes with eighth notes in the snare drum part.The piece begins with a four measure trumpet solo. Optional cues are provided for flute, clarinet or alto saxophone. Emphasis should be given to four measure phrases throughout the piece. Observe the breath marks. Young students who have trouble achieving a four measure phrase are probably not utilizing their air properly and need to control the air stream better and correct embouchure deficiencies. Students must be taught how to count a multiple measure rest.
