Antiphonal

$75.00

By Bruce R. Smith

Antiphonal is an interchange between the three major groups of the band, the woodwind choir, the brass choir and the percussion ensemble. The use of these independent groups gives a purity of sound to the composition. The drive of the piece gives it a festive flavor. The sections continuously exchange position of importance with each other.. This composition essentially is written in the aeolian mode. Utilizing the key signature of E flat or C minor, the flowing scale patterns of the woodwinds contrast the fanfare type of themes in the brass and percussion sections. There are several brief solos for the principal instruments of the ensemble. This piece was commissioned by and is dedicated to the 2003 All-Madison County Middle School Band, Madison County, Indiana. It was premiered on March 1, 2003, at the Reardon Auditorium at Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana. The conductor for this performance was Janice Stockhouse, Director of Bands, Bloomington High School North, Bloomington, Indiana.
