Written in 1992 for the String Orchestra of the Rockies, Music for String Orchestra is comprised of three movements. The middle movement, Elegy, is a "small concerto for viola," says Maslanka, noting the featured solo. Dance, the third movement, brings Maslanka back once again to consider the poetry of his longtime friend Richard Beale. Maslanka helpfully provides full program notes and recordings on his website.
