Karl Höller (1907 - 1987) came from an old Franconian family of musicians. He made his first attempts at composition at the early age of 5. In the beginning, his father taught him how to play the organ, later on, he studied the subjects organ, composition and theory in Würzburg and Munich. He was a pupil of Joseph Haas. His professional career took him from Munich to the Frankfurt conservatory and finally back to Munich where he was President of the College of Music from 1954 to 1972. Above all, he composed instrumental works. He won international acclaim in 1932/33 with his work "Orchestral hymns". He destroyed nearly all of his early compositions but by chance, this cycle of songs survived. Cäsar Flaischlen (1864 - 1920) worked as a poet, narrator and dramatist; he developed a philosophy of art on his own and edited the modern art magazine "Pan" . He mainly concentrated on the topics of naturalism and symbolism.
