Piccolodeon is a duet for piccolo and piano that expresses the mood and sonority of the “Nickelodeon,” an early 20th-century arcade instrument used for silent movies, carousels, and vaudeville theatre. The piece begins as a playful ragtime with the instruments in sync. Gradually, the ensemble unravels to the point where it’s a toss-up as to which player is off. This musical gem is full of surprise and delight!

PICCOLODEON was composed in honor of my dear friends Susan Greenberg and Delores Stevens, co-founders and directors of Chamber Music Palisades, for the 15th Anniversary of their organization.Since it was a joyful occasion, I chose the piccolo to display the playfulness and collaboration of these two great musicians. I had the sound of the hurdy-gurdy in my head and thought of the carousel and memories of the Nickelodeon. The piece begins with an introductory statement and proceeds into a playful duet with the two instruments in sync. As the piece continues, the duo begins to unravel, and by the end it is a choice as to who is right and who is not. A surprise and a delight!— Adrienne Albert
