This piece was inspired by a Sicilian fairy tale about a man named Bensurdatu. The piece begins with a melody celebrating the figure of Bensurdatu played as a horn solo before this melody is passed on to the woodwind instruments as the piece unfolds. Bensurdatu was a loyal servant of a king who embarks on a journey to rescue three princesses who were abducted by black clouds that had suddenly appeared. On this long journey with an unknown final destination, Bensurdatu encounters aggressive monsters and was even betrayed by his friend... where the piece enters an Allegro section with a different atmosphere. The eerie melody played by the piccolo, clarinet, and baritone saxophone depicts Bensurdatu’s battle with the aggressive monsters who had captured the princesses. Although the hard-fought battle hung in the balance for some time, Bensurdatu eventually prevailed and was honored by the king before he lived happily with the princesses he had rescued. Bensurdatu was granted three golden crowns for overcoming these trials and tribulations, which symbolize his wonderful courage and righteousness. The clarinet ensemble and the woodwind section of this piece play a heartwarming melody that invokes feelings of bliss, before the music gradually builds up to a final section where the piece closes by celebrating the glorious achievements of Bensurdatu.
