This piece was commissioned by Edogawa Youth Wind Orchestra in 2011 and 2012.Composed based on the requested theme of the “Tokyo Sky Tree,” the two separate parts of the piece premiered in 2011 prior to the completion of the piece and in 2012 after its completion, respectively. As the “Sky Tree” did not evoke a powerful image for me, I attempted to depict the aerial view of Tokyo from the Edo period to the present day in this piece. The first part was inspired by the “three major festivals of Edo” and the “lives of the people of Edo” and written in a Japanese style, while the second part portrays the journey from the dark times in Tokyo’s past such as “World War II” and the “Great Kanto Earthquake” to the present day.The flute solo in the opening mimics the calls of black kites as they soar into the sky.
