Legends say that when Empress Jingu was trying to conquer Silla and various divinities were doing their best to help her, the deity living in the depths of the sea, Azumi-no-isora, did not show up.
Two sacred pearls with the power to freely control the ebb and flow of the tides, Shiomitsutama and Shiofurutama, were housed in the dragon palace at the bottom of the sea, where Isora lived. The empress believed that the power of these pearls held the key to her victory and ordered Isora to be brought to her at all costs. To lure Isora from the depths of the sea, a stage was set up in the sea to perform the music and dance that Isora enjoyed and attract his attention. However, Isora was reluctant to hand over the powerful pearls so easily.
Eventually, he was moved by the Empress’ determination and agreed to help her as doing so would also keep the sea safe and peaceful. He presented the Shiomitsutama and Shiofurutama to the Empress, who then successfully conquered Silla.
The invasion would not have been successful without the support of Azumi-no-isora, and thus he is still worshipped at Shinto shrines today as the deity of the sea.
