Hirokazu FUKUSHIMA

This piece was commissioned in 2015 by the Bihoro Wind Ensemble for its 40th anniversary.

The word "Kamuito" in the title of the piece refers to Lake Mashu, also known as the lake of the gods. I was guided by a member of the ensemble around Lake Mashu as part of an interview, and I decided to subtitle the piece "Poetry of the Blue Earth" based on my impression of the stunning blue color of the lake's surface, the earth, and the sky.

The piece opens with a solo motif played by the English horn, which is then developed in different rhythms and tempos. The Ainu mode is unique for its use of phrases that contain repetitions of the fourth and fifth intervals, which evoke a slightly rugged feel as compared to melodies written in normal scales. However, this rugged quality is vital for the atmosphere and character of this piece, so please pay special attention to these fourth and fifth intervals during your performance.PLEASE NOTE - This item is sold on a rental basis.
