This fresco, which is among those decorating the interior of the Sistine Chapel in the Apostolic Palace in Rome, was produced by the Italian Renaissance painter Pietro Perugino in 1481 - 1482.
The scene, part of the series of the Stories of Jesus on the chapel's northern wall, is a reference to Matthew 16 in which Saint Peter is given the keys of the kingdom of heaven. These keys represent the authority to share the word of God, which grants the power to allow others into heaven, and Saint Peter is shown in the middle, kneeling to Christ as he receives these keys.
I composed this piece while giving thought to the music that was created during the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries, between the Medieval and Baroque periods of music.
