While I was composing this piece, my advisor Sotaro Makabe gave me the idea of referencing a piece by Beethoven. (The first performance of this piece was scheduled for 2020, which happened to be the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.) At the time that I received this commission, I was about to turn 30 years old. When he was around that age, Beethoven was composing the Piano Sonata No. 14 (commonly known as Moonlight Sonata). I decided to use this piece as the foundation for my piece, given also that I wished to recreate this piece, which is still beloved all around the world, using wind instruments.
More specifically, I have borrowed the dotted rhythm created using the same sound and rising arpeggio from Beethoven’s piece as the two main motifs, while also adding an original melody that represents the sorrow of Beethoven, who lived his life with serious despair in the form of deafness. By organically bringing together and contrasting these elements, my goal was to capture the life and spirituality of this man who eventually became a celebrated musician.
