Written for Fostermusic Inc. (Japan) in 2022, "The King of Uruk" is composed based on the story of Gilgamesh, who was the leader of an ancient town Uruk in Mesopotamian mythology during the second millennium BC, and is also a well-known character of the historical literature "The Epic of Gilgamesh". The dramatic piece follows the story as below:
-Gilgamesh, the tyrant, walk down the middle of the town (beginning)
-After God sees civilians' fear toward Gilgamesh, he create Enkidu (rehearsal letter A)
-Gilgamesh fights with Enkidu (rehearsal C)
-After the fight, Gilgamesh and Enkidu become a friend (rehearsal F)
-Gilgamesh and Enkidu go to the forest to beat Humbaba (rehearsal I)
-He finished the mission and make a triumphant return to Uruk (rehearsal O)
The piece is orchestrated with many optional instruments, to be performed from 12 players in minimum through 35 or more players. Any size of band can perform the piece dramatically with an effective orchestration, with each players imaging the scenes of Gilgamesh while performing. (If you add piano, you will get a rich and stable band sound particularly on middle and low ranges)
The minimum number of players for percussion is 2 players. One player can play timpani, suspended-cymbal and wind chime with same mallets, while the other player can play tom-tom, snare drum, hi-hat and bass drum with drum set. In order to get the perfect mixture with the wind instruments, percussionists should adjust the volume and timbre depend on the size of the band.
