Hiroaki KATAOKA

I was commissioned by Professor Taishi Arima from Moka Kids Harmony to compose this piece in 2020. In the same year, it was performed for the first time by 26 elementary school students.


Of the pieces I had worked on up to that point, if there was a Japanese influence on the piece, the inspiration came from Japanese mythology almost all of the time. As I was seeking a new worldview for this piece, I thought that it might be interesting to write it based on the theme of harmony between Japanese and Oriental elements, and I attempted to design the melody and form the orchestration accordingly. The beginning is comprised of five fragments, and although the phrases are short, they change gradually and hint at how the piece will go on to unfold. In addition, the parts with fast tempo can be considered the heart and soul of this piece, as they have Kataoka’s distinctive sharp rhythm. Since the Japanese and Oriental sound is built on a pentatonic scale, if you try looking for the tone clusters scattered about in each scene, you may discover the mechanisms built into the piece. Aiming to perform the piece without leaving any gaps while heading toward the end should produce a sense of coherence.


Lastly, it would make me happy if each performer could perform this piece based on their own imagination and interpretation of the thoughts behind the title.
