Eiji SUZUKI

The repertoire of marching music has witnessed an increase in new entries in recent years, with a rise in the number of works by Japanese composers as well.

This piece was commissioned by the Kwassui Junior High School & High School Marching Band and premiered by the band at the 2017 All Japan Marching Contest. It was written as a suite of four pieces, featuring Sousa's "Hands Across the Sea" and Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" at its heart and containing echoes of works associated with the South Pacific and other parts of America. The first movement of the suite also showcases part of my "Fanfare 'S-E-A'" to create a deeper connection with the sea.

The piece was written with standard orchestration, which allows it to be performed by both concert bands and marching bands. The CD recording contains a simplified percussion part for the fourth movement that caters specially to concert bands, but marching bands are advised to perform this part using the Marching Percussion score separately provided.
