This piece with a duration of around 8.5 minutes was commissioned by the Meiji University Wind Orchestra in 2008. I had consulted with the commissioning party and began conceptualizing this piece with the hope of writing something in the memory of my benefactor who had passed away at a young age earlier that year. The piece opens in the key of D-flat in a subdued manner before an inquisitive solo of the alto saxophone is introduced. More instruments are then brought into the fold and the piece progresses to a majestic choral section. Various fragmented motifs are dispersed throughout the piece as a new melody gradually takes hold to transform the direction of the piece, before a solemn brass choral section unfolds with an interspersed oboe solo. This section is based on the very first melody I ever wrote in my life. Although it had emerged momentarily in the opening section of the piece, it is showcased perfectly in its ultimate form here. The different motifs that had been featured up to this point then re-appear and linger in the air before the piece fades into silence as it comes to an end. This piece is dedicated to Hiroyuki Tominaga, someone who is very important to me.
