Daisuke SHIMIZU

This piece was commissioned by the Iwade Second Junior High School in Wakayama Prefecture in 2007, and was performed for the first time at the All-Japan Band Competition in the same year.

There was a request for the theme of “the sea”, so I actually visited the sea in Wakayama to expand the image. Among them, “Shirahama Beach” and “Sandanbeki” were particularly impressive. Then, I further composed my impressions of the sea on the image.The seascape of Wakayama was the most beautiful I have ever seen. The beauty and magnificence of the sea were as if it were giving us great power and wisdom. I hope that the audience and the performers will feel the thoughts embodied in this work in this work.

The music begins with a quiet scene imagining the “morning sea” and gradually shows up a magnificent and powerful main theme from the middle-low as the chirping of a gull (expressing using a clarinet mouthpiece) resonates. After the alto saxophone solo reminiscent of the gentle mother sea, the vehement scenes depicting “Sandanbeki” alternate between the strength and beauty of the sea. The two themes don’t mix, after being blocked by a single eighth note, the main theme is reproduced and guided by the strict rhythm of the snare drum to express the “wisdom of the sea”, then this music climaxes and closes.

In this version, the orchestration and grade have been reconsidered, the range and tuplets have been changed to make it easier to play, and the playing time has been shortened to 6 minutes and 45 seconds.
