This piece was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kitakami Tenshochi Park, one of the most famous places for viewing cherry blossoms in the Tohoku region.
Kitakami Tenshochi is located on the banks of the placid Kitakami River, and it is counted among the "100 Best Places to View Cherry Blossoms," and the "3 Best Places to View Cherry Blossoms in the Michinoku Region." Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture is my hometown, and I have a deep emotional connection to this place.
The word "yumemigusa" (literally "dream grass") is a poetic term for cherry blossoms that likens the beauty and ephemeral nature of the sight of cherry blossoms in bloom to a dream. The word "mamorite" (meaning "keeper" or "protector") refers not only to the gardeners who have looked after these cherry trees for generations and those who will succeed them among future generations, but also to the desire to continue cherishing this local treasure.
This piece is a wind instrument composition about seven and half minutes long in three parts: Part 1 "An Emotional Scene of Cherry Trees in Rows," Part 2 "The Splendor of the Cherry Blossoms Festival and the Unsung Cherry Tree Keepers who Sustain It," and Part 3 "Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Tenshochi and a Brilliant Future." I hope that groups associated with the city of Kitakami perform it here with pride. I would also hope that many other groups, even those with no connection to Kitakami, will contemplate the spirit of appreciating the beauty of cherry blossoms and the people who support them, and express the profound splendor of Japan.
