Chorale was originally written for guitar orchestra, and is here reduced to quartet with some reworking of the material. At one point, Hand feels that this new reconstitution may be overly challenging for some, so he includes the original version of one section as an appendix, which can be used instead of the new version. About Chorale, Hand writes, "Based on a simple theme of three notes ascending in whole steps, Chorale is inspired by the renaissance and baroque choral music that I listened to in my youth (especially Bach Chorales). Although I've integrated some of my favorite jazz harmonies and rhythms into the fabric of the music, I feel that at it's core, it very much has an early music sensibility."
