This is the study score of Bonds' powerful orchestral work. Composed in 1964 and dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. The work is based on the African American spiritual “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me.” It is based on events and ideas in the civil-rights movement from the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-56) through the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing that killed four young Black American girls in Birmingham on 15 September 1963.
Written at the height of her extraordinary career, Margaret Bonds’ Montgomery Variations was composed in 1963 after the notable composer visited Montgomery, Alabama and was moved to write a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. A life-long advocate of civil rights and social justice, Bonds composed this series of seven creative interpretations based on the traditional spiritual melody “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me.” Like many other songs of hope and courage, this tune gained great attention during the Civil Rights Movement, but regrettably, Bonds never heard her orchestral piece performed and it was only discovered in 2017. This study score includes all seven movements that describe each step of the heroic uprising during this time of social awakening, including "Decision," "March," and "Benediction."
