George Gershwin / arr. Nelson Riddle

Scroll down for Related Items listings.

This arrangement by Nelson Riddle was recorded in 1959 by Ella Fitzgerald for her Gershwin Songbook three album set. The arrangement opens with a vocal/bass duet (with drums on brushes). The ensemble slowly enters and eventually builds to the exciting shout section that features a few 2-bar unaccompanied drum fills. Things quiet down for the vocal re-entry and then build up again as the brass shout out the counter-melody. After the brass have their final say the bottom drops out leaving a trio of flutes (with string and bass accompaniment) to play a variation on the melody. This arrangement was written for a studio orchestra (big band with strings) and has been published this way. Included is an optional synthesizer part that may be used in place of the strings. However, the string parts may be left out all together and the chart will play fine. There is a brief flute double for alto sax 2 and both tenor saxophones at the very end of the arrangement.
