Commissioned as an encore piece, Machine is a short and energetic work of less than three minutes. The program it was premiered on featured works by composers with vast outputs of music, specifically Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Higdon says her inspiration for the vigorous and frenzied work comes from Mozart and Tchaikovsky themselves and their ability to produce incredible amounts of repertoire.
Says Higdon, “[Machine is a] tribute to composers like Mozart and Tchaikovsky, who seemed to be able to write so many notes and so much music that it seems like they were machines!” Musically, this is represented by a steady foundational motor rhythm juxtaposed with virtuosic work in the upper voices.
