Giovanni Gabrieli (1554/1557 – 1612) was an Italian composer and organist. He was one of the most influential musicians of his time, and represents the culmination of the style of the Venetian School, at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms. Hodie Christus natus est (Today, Christ is born) dates from 1597, and was composed originally for two antiphonal five voice choirs. It is a fabulous example of Giovanni Gabrieli’s multi-choir music in which he extends the notion of rhythm and expands tonal colours to create the pulse of the music. This arrangement is a version for double brass quintet or brass choir by Elliott Chasanov (University of Illinois).
