L'italiana in Algeri is an operatic 'dramma giocoso' in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Angelo Anelli, based on his earlier text set by Luigi Mosca. The music is characteristic of Rossini's style, remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies. The Italian Girl in Algiers was composed in typical Rossini fashion: quickly, in less than a month. The composer conducted the premiere of the work that he called a melodramma giocoso in Venice in May 1813. In February 1817, it became the first Rossini opera to be given in Paris, where the composer was eventually to reside. The Overture to 'An Italian in Algiers' has been arranged for brass ensemble by Elliott Chasanov (University of Illinois). The score is printed on bigger size (B4) for practical use.
