Melancholic South-American atmospheres and driving rhythms intersect in Danzón N.2, a fascinating work by contemporary Mexican composer Arturo Márquez (born in Álamos in 1950). The composer has used the danzón, a traditional Cuban dance that is also common in the Mexican region of Veracruz, as source of inspiration for a series of compositions. Danzón N.2, commissioned in 2004 by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, quickly became the most famous work of the series thanks to the celebrated performances of the “Simon Bolivar” Youth Orchestra of Venezuela conducted by Gustavo Dudamel during its tour of Europe and United States in 2007.
