In June of 2019, Adam Riccento (conductor of the Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra) approached me looking for a brass piece to feature during their 2019-2020 concert season. It was his hope to find something that would fit a standard orchestral instrumentation. While there are many pieces for brass, often they require a large number of forces or specialty instruments which may not lend well to a typical orchestral section. Initially, we discussed arranging an existing piece but in preparing to write I came across a previous sketch that had gone unused. That material, found at the very opening of this work, was partially used in the closing minute of my Symphony No. 1 however I felt there was more for the music to say in a stand alone piece and this proved to be a perfect opportunity to do so.
This work is intended to provoke joyous and reflective emotions and is perfect as a concert opener or closer.
Following the premiere, the West Point Band performed the piece as their season opener in January of 2020 which spurred requests for a concert band version of the piece.. The celebratory and uplifting nature of the work works perfectly as a concert band work. Staying true to the harmonic and brass focus, the woodwinds compliment the brass with a series of bright and quick scalular runs and rhythmic repetition.
